Unchanged from the visit to Arsenal, the Whites emerged to a cauldron of noise inside Elland Road.
A couple of testing deliveries into the Manchester United penalty area from Jayden Bogle and James Justin almost caused the visitors problems with Dominic Calvert-Lewin lurking but the opposition were able to clear their lines.
Then, with United dominating possession, an Ethan Ampadu long throw hurled into the middle was flicked on by Muharemović but a red shirt was first to react and the danger was averted. Moments later, the duo combined in a near identical passage of play which Senne Lammens collected.
Anton Stach was next to swing in a teasing cross which Nico Elvedi rose highest to meet, powering a header towards goal which Lammens did well to parry. Down the other end, Bryan Mbeumo went close as he headed wide of the upright.
Just after the half-hour mark, Amad Diallo looked to spring the offside trap and raced in behind until England international James Trafford rushed out to make a crucial interception 40 yards from goal.
The opposition took the lead before the break. Mbeumo latched onto a low cross at the front post and poked an effort into the far corner.
Searching for an immediate response, the ball was headed to the onrushing Ao Tanaka on the edge of the penalty area who forced a save from Lammens with a powerful half-volley. Then, Calvert-Lewin’s run was found by Bogle though the striker was unable to direct his header on target.
Approaching the break, a line-splitting pass released Bogle. Twisting and turning into the area, the wing-back’s eventual shot was smothered by a crowd of bodies allowing the keeper to collect.
HALF TIME: Leeds United 0-1 Manchester United
The Whites emerged from the interval unchanged and on the front foot searching for an equaliser in West Yorkshire. Farke’s side controlled possession and combined well particularly down the right flank looking to carve open the opposition.
Six minutes into the second period and the pressure finally told. Bogle won a corner on the right and Stach curled in a superb delivery that was flicked on by Muharemović.
Calvert-Lewin did brilliantly, taking a touch to compose himself before lashing beyond the despairing dive of Lammens as Elland Road erupted.
With the wind in Leeds’ sails, United drove forward once more. Another dangerous cross was only partially cleared to Tanaka though on the volley, the Japanese midfielder drove narrowly over the upright.
Just after the hour mark, Noah Okafor was unable to keep a powerful strike down following a scramble inside the area that had seen Ampadu dragged to the floor by Harry Maguire, though nothing was doing for referee Darren England.
In a rare venture forward for the away team, captain Bruno Fernandes dragged wide of the far post from the edge of the area. The midfielder also had a speculative effort from distance collected with ease by Trafford.
Moments before Lukas Nmecha was introduced into the action, Stach had an opportunity from the edge of the area but similar to Tanaka and Okafor, the Germany international powered over the upright.
A second alteration from the dugout saw Sean Longstaff brought on in place of Tanaka as Farke added fresh legs into the midfield. With tired legs evident on both sides play became stretched in the final minutes and there was a final chance for Leeds to win it. Ampadu's cross was punched as far as Stach and though he beat Lammens with a sidefoot effort, it hit a defender and the visiting stopper recovered.
