Leeds United are honoured to announce legendary midfielder Johnny Giles has been given a Lifetime Achievement Award for his stellar services to the club.

Spanning an iconic career at Elland Road, the Irishman represented the Whites for 12 seasons, winning an array of honours in the great Don Revie team of the 1960s and 70s.

After impressing over the Pennines with Manchester United, Giles headed to West Yorkshire in 1963 and proved an instant hit as he helped guide the side to the Second Division title in his first season at the club.

Throughout his illustrious time in Leeds, Giles formed a formidable midfield partnership with Billy Bremner that was revered around the world.

Johnny was an integral part of a squad who won the First Division twice in 1968/69 and 1973/74, the 1972 FA Cup, the 1968 League Cup, the 1969 Charity Shield and two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups. Giles was also a runner up in the 1975 European Cup.

Across all competitions, the Dublin-born star made 527 appearances for the Whites and scored 115 goals, firmly cementing himself as one of Leeds United’s best ever players.

Johnny later enjoyed a spell with West Bromwich Albion after leaving the club in 1975, before heading across the pond to Philadelphia Fury and then finishing his career with Shamrock Rovers in his native Ireland.

Capped 59 times for his country, Giles would also enjoy a spell as a player-manager of the national team – alongside similar stints with West Brom and Shamrock Rovers – as well as taking charge of Vancouver Whitecaps.

The 84-year-old was presented with the award by Leeds United Managing Director Robbie Evans pitchside at Elland Road ahead of the team’s Premier League clash with AFC Bournemouth.

Congratulations Johnny, you are an iconic figure of the club and we are honoured to call you one of our legends.
