Leeds United were forced to settle with a point in a goalless draw at Elland Road as they faced Brentford in their latest Premier League encounter.
In an attritional encounter dominated by both team’s defences, the Whites threatened – particularly in the second half – but were unable to break the deadlock.
Before the match got underway, everyone inside the ground came together for a poignant moment of reflection, remembering Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight 26 years on from their tragic passing supporting their club in Istanbul.
It was the visitors who got the first chance of the game through a looping Mathias Jensen corner towards the back post which was swiftly cleared by Anton Stach to safety.
The hosts then had their first opportunity when skipper Ethan Ampadu delivered a ball over the top of the visitors’ defence to find Jayden Bogle, whose shot was blocked by Bees defender Ethan Pinnock.
Brentford’s Michael Kayode launched a throw in into the Leeds box which found the head of opposition captain Nathan Collins which resulted in Karl Darlow calmly collecting.
The Whites advanced forward searching for an opener, as Bogle’s deflected cross found Calvert-Lewin in the area but evaded Lukas Nmecha at the back post.
Pascal Stuijk’s lofted pass found Stach outside the penalty area, laying it off to Bogle whose attempt was charged down and fell to James Justin who blazed the ball over the bar.
It was the right back yet again involved in the offensive action as his fierce shot from distance was blocked by the face of Nathan Collins, with the tie remaining goalless as the first half neared to a close.
Nmecha found space on the edge of the area before unleashing a strike which found the gloves of Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher in the final meaningful action of the opening 45 minutes.
HALF TIME: Leeds United 0-0 Brentford
Both teams emerged for the second half unchanged and the Whites had to defend early on as Jensen found space inside the area with his shot only able to hit the side netting.
Leeds responded through Brenden Aaronson, firing a low strike from the outside of the box that flew wide of the upright as Daniel Farke’s side probed for an opener.
Brentford then had their best opportunity of the game as Jensen fed a through ball into the path of Kevin Schade but was met by Darlow who came to claim the ball and diffuse the Brentford attack.
Farke was the first to turn to his bench for reinforcements, introducing Noah Okafor and Ao Tanaka in place of Aaronson and Nmecha.
Japanese international Tanaka found space on the edge of the box, unleashing a strike which was deflected by Igor Thiago for another corner where Struijk was unable to put his header towards goal, before he was replaced by Daniel James.
With the game drawing to a close, Okafor found space down the left and his shot at goal was saved by Kelleher before James’ low cross was cleared by the Brentford defence.
Following a flurry of chances, Leeds were unable to find a goal as the game ended all square. The Whites return to action after the international break in the Emirates FA Cup, where they will face West Ham United at the London Stadium for a place in the semi-finals.
