Ao Tanaka shines as Japan edge Scotland 1-0 at Hampden Park

Ao Tanaka Japan Scotland March 26

Leeds United midfielder Ao Tanaka played a key role as Japan secured a 1-0 victory over Scotland at Hampden Park on Saturday, continuing their preparations ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

The 27-year-old Tanaka, who featured for 78 minutes before being replaced by Daichi Kamada, was heavily involved in the action. He made 79 touches, completed 62 passes at an impressive 90% accuracy, produced a key pass, and registered a shot that rattled the woodwork. His defensive work was equally industrious, with seven recoveries, five duels won, a clearance, and a tackle to his name.

The breakthrough came late in the game when Junya Ito scored in the 84th minute to secure the win for Hajime Moriyasu’s side. Tanaka had earlier tested the Scottish goal, firing a close-range effort onto the top of the crossbar as Japan looked for an opener.

Japan now turn their attention to England, who they face at Wembley on Tuesday, 31 March, with Tanaka expected to continue playing a pivotal role in midfield.
